I shouldn’t have to
have this talk
I shouldn’t have to
tell my daughter or son that one day a man who is supposed to protect you
Hold himself high in
power and therefore should have control of the situation
Could one day ruin
your life and very possibly end you.
I shouldn’t have to
have this talk
I shouldn’t have to
have this fear
That one day you won’t
come home like your suppose to
Not because you were
robbed or committed a crime
But because you
questioned authority one time
One time and the last
time
I shouldn’t have to
have this conflict
Because I wear the
very badge and race I fear
Hoping that I can make
things better while wondering if its hopeless
Knowing that black
and blue is treated differently
And though I wear
both colors boldly I also wear it unequally
You shouldn’t have to
know
That you anger could
get you killed
Your childish
mistakes could get you killed
You unarmed non-compliance
could get you killed
Running could get you
killed
Bad mouthing could
get you killed
Your race (could kill
you) could get you killed
AND I SHOULDN’T HAVE TO LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE
MY 8-YEAR-OLD CHILD HEARS THIS BUT………… “Sweetheart we need to have a talk”
